Your Native American Flute ~ Easy To Play
It's easy to learn how to play your Native American Flute. The construction of the flute makes blowing into it and producing sound simple. Anyone can play a melody the first time they pick up a flute. The way the Native American Flute is tuned makes this possible. The natural fingering position makes this a minor pentatonic flute. Breathing is the key. Learning to breathe from your diaphragm is the beginning. This can be challenging at first. After playing around with this page you will have a good start toward understanding your flute.

Understanding the symbols in the fingering charts below.

You use the same fingering pattern for the 6 hole flute as you do the 5 hole flute when you play songs that use the minor pentatonic scale. The 3rd hole from the top down on the 6 hole Native American Flute is the added hole that a 5 hole flute does not have. By always keeping this hole covered on your 6 hole flute, you are playing the same notes that are played on a 5 hole flute.

There are many songs that are not played using the minor pentatonic scale. This is when the 6 hole native american flute is the more versatile instrument.

If you play only the notes that are made by fully opening or fully closing a hole on your native american flute, you can easily create a melody. In the sound samples below I will play the minor pentatonic scale. After you have played the scale a few times, try changing the order that you play the notes in. This is an easy way to play a little melody. That's the beauty of this instrument. You play whatever is in your heart.
