You Can Play Along

If you've never experienced the awe that fills you when you play music with other people, you need to. It's proof positive that we are all connected.

The songs in
the music player on this page, are a diverse collection of very talented musicians from around the globe. They are a lot of fun to accompany. The songs are instrumentals. These are original pieces of work written and performed by the artists themselves.

Discover how your Native American Flute is a diverse instrument. It blends well with instruments from all around the world. You will play along with these different instruments such as: guitars, drums, pianos, keyboards, strings, synthesizers etc.. All of the songs are completed pieces of work that are a joy to listen to. They also lend themselves to easy flute accompaniment.

Choosing A Song

1
. Read through the information on this page as you scroll down.

2. Located in the World Music Song Chart near the bottom of this page, find the songs that match the key of your flute. Use the fingering pattern that we suggest.

3. Click on the title of the song in
the music player, near the bottom of this page and start enjoying playing along with these wonderful musicians.

Know Your Flute

You need to know what key your flute is tuned to. It's the note you are playing when all the holes are covered on your flute. It is called the root note. Knowing what key your flute is tuned to, will help you choose which songs your flute will play easily with.

If your flute was made by us, this note is burned onto the back along with our signature, date, and flute number.

You can listen to the single notes played on flutes below to determine the key of your flute. Play the note, play your flute and you can hear when you have a match.

* NOTE - Breathing Pressure Effects Pitch

Breathing Pressure
The pressure that you are using to blow into the flute comes from using your diaphragm to control it. Don't confuse pressure, with amount of air. It's not the amount of the air, it's the pressure behind it.

A. Push Harder = the pitch will rise ( between 1/4 to 1/8 of a step )
Hear an example -
The 1st flute is played on pitch. The 2nd flute starts out FLAT, but as I add more pressure the pitch rises. Then, the two flutes sound like "one" flute.

B. Push Softer = the pitch will fall ( between 1/4 to 1/8 of a step)
Hear an example -
The 1st flute is played on pitch. The 2nd flute starts out SHARP, but as I decrease the air pressure the pitch lowers. Then, the two flutes sound like "one" flute.

Click Here to listen to how much you can raise and lower one single note on your flute by changing the pressure that you are using.

What Key Is Your Flute Tuned To?
  .

1. Click on a blue letter below to hear that key of flute played.
2. Cover all the holes on your flute and blow into your flute. When your flute sounds the same as what you are hearing being played by us, that is the key of your flute.

What Notes To Play On Your Flute
You can use the Minor Pentatonic Scale illustrated below, to play along with some of the songs in the music player. There are fingering pattern variations that you can play, too.

A group of notes, played together is called a Phrase. You can change how the song feels and sounds just by Starting and Stopping in a different place. The Start/Stop place, I call the Pivot Note.

Below are examples of how changing the Pivot Note can change the feel of the song. Listen to the differences. Play them on your flute.

Sometimes you will want to play the scale by starting in a different position. The note that you start on, does make a difference in how the song you are playing sounds. You can start and stop on any note on your flute. Try playing the fingering pattern variations shown below.
